What is a Skins Game in Golf?

A skins game is one of the most popular match-play style formats for casual rounds, tournaments, leagues, and golf outings. Unlike traditional stroke play, where the lowest total score wins, a game of skins rewards players for winning individual holes.

In skins golf, each hole is assigned a monetary value called a "skin." To win the skin, a player must have the lowest score on that hole. If 2 or more players tie for the best score, no skin is awarded, and the skin carries over to the next hole. This carryover feature is what makes skins golf so exciting. A single hole late in the round can be worth several skins, creating dramatic finishes and keeping every golfer involved until the final putt.

How Does a Game of Skins Work
How Does a Game
of Skins Work? Skins Work

  • Assign a Value to Each Skin

Before the round gets started, agree on what each skin is worth: cash, points, or a prize. Equal values per hole keep things simple, though many groups weight the back nine holes higher.

  • Play Each Hole Normally

Every golfer plays by the match play rules. Adjustments only apply to Net Skins in golf, where handicap strokes are assigned to specific holes.

  • Determine the Hole Winner

The player with the lowest score on the hole wins the skin. The win must be exclusive; if two or more players share the low score, nobody claims the skin.

  • Carry Over Tied Skins

When players tie, the skin rolls to the next hole and the value stacks. Each additional tie adds another skin to the pot, making late-round holes worth more.

Scoring in Skins

Golf Format golf-format

  • Outright Win

The lowest score on a hole wins that skin, but only if no other player matches it. Ties mean no skin is awarded; the full value carries over directly to the next hole.

  • Growing Stakes

Consecutive ties carry skins forward, turning one ordinary hole into a five or six-skin showdown that keeps every player fighting until the final putt.

  • Handicaps

Handicap strokes are assigned by stroke index, creating Net Skins that level the playing field. This keeps the skins game golf format competitive and fair for mixed-ability groups at any level.

  • Final Payout

Payout equals the skin value multiplied by the number of holes won. Win more than you contributed and you profit. The player with the most skins wins the most.

Variations of
Skins Game Golf

money-skins icon

Money Skins

Each skin carries a fixed cash value agreed before the round. Players settle up based on total skins in golf after 18 holes. The simplest, most universally played variation at every level of the game.

points-skins icon

Points Skins

Players earn points per skin instead of cash. Built for leagues and club competitions where prize money is not used, with points feeding directly into a season-long standings table throughout the year.

birdie-skins icon

Birdie Skins

Only a birdie or better wins the skin. Pars and bogeys cannot claim a hole regardless of what the rest of the field scores. A sharper, more demanding variation designed for competitive low-handicap golfers.

whole-skins icon

Whole Pot Skins

One shared prize pool, distributed across all players at the end of the round. Whoever wins the most skins takes the largest share. Clean, straightforward, and easy to run in any group format.

howmany-player icon

How Many Players Can
Play A Game of Skins?

two-player icon

2 Players

Head-to-head skins golf is the most direct format available. Every hole is a straight two-score contest. Carryovers still apply on halved holes, keeping value accumulating until one player wins the hole clean.

three-player icon

3 Players

Three-player skins produce more carryovers naturally. Two players can more easily match the low score, so larger pots build more frequently. Each outright win carries more value and the round stays competitive throughout.

four-player icon

4 Players

It's the most common skins game golf setup worldwide. Four scores create a natural mix of outright wins and carryovers across the round. This format is standard for weekend games, casual rounds, and corporate golf events at every level.

tournament icon

Tournaments

Large competitions split skins in golf into gross and net categories, running alongside the main event. Every participant can buy in, with live skins standings tracked and updated hole by hole throughout the entire round.
